Bruce Alberts, president of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, is a respected biochemist recognized for his work in both biochemistry and molecular biology. Alberts graduated from Harvard College with a degree in biochemical sciences and earned a doctorate from Harvard University in 1965. He joined the faculty of Princeton University in 1966 and after ten years moved to the Medical School of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Alberts is committed to the improvement of science education; while in San Francisco, he helped to create City Science, an ongoing program that links UCSF to the improvement of science teaching in San Francisco elementary schools.
